This test is dedicated to the crossover, which we have been waiting for a really long time. Nissan Juke of the second generation will soon be brought to Ukrainian car dealerships. Therefore, it’s time to tell you how the new product differs from the previous model and whether the price of this crossover has increased significantly with the change of generation.
Nissan Juke front view
The 2020 Nissan Juke is a new generation model that was first introduced back in 2010. At first glance, it seems that ten years for one generation is too long (by modern standards). But in fact, there was no point in rushing, because the first Juke turned out to be so expressive and non-trivial that even today it looks like an alien from another automotive galaxy. However, it still sells well. Not least because of the rather attractive prices.

But sooner or later everything comes to an end. In our case, the end of the previous Juke was the appearance of the next generation of the model. Despite the fact that Nissan is a Japanese brand, this particular crossover has almost nothing to do with Japan. Like the previous generation of the model, this Juke was developed in the UK, and it is intended exclusively for the European market. In addition, the crossover now also consists of 2/3 of the parts produced in the same Britain, and even the automatic gearbox is no longer Japanese. And it’s not clear if all this is good news. In any case, the Nissan Juke has never been distinguished by the so-called legendary Japanese reliability, but perhaps now it will become European-style technological.
Looking at the front of the car, many do not even immediately guess where the headlights are located. The upper part of the optics is the dimensions, and the oval block headlight already includes low and high beams, as well as DRL. All this looks very modern, but I was surprised that the turn signals here are still not led. The engineers ‘ decision to leave incandescent light bulbs instead of installing diodes probably makes some deep sense, but for me it is still a mystery.
Nissan Juke optics and bumper
But whatever it was, now there are complete sets where the head light is completely diode, there are also 19-inch wheels and the now fashionable two-color body paint (or rather, one of the 15 combinations of your choice). The handles of the rear doors (despite arguments about their impracticality) were left in the same place, because they have already become the business card of the model.
Nissan Juke rear door handle
In General, the appearance of Juke is still recognizable, bold and even some impudent, and most importantly, it has become even more modern. On the other hand, the car now looks more serious, and I’m sure there are far fewer people who will call it “ugly”now.
Nissan Juke tail lights
And in terms of dimensions, the crossover has become more “solid”: it has added 75 mm in length (4210 mm against 4135 mm), and the wheelbase has grown by as much as 106 mm (2636 mm against 2530 mm). By the way, this indicator Juke is equal to the Toyota C-HR (its wheelbase is 2640 mm). And if earlier claims to the amount of space in the cabin were justified, now the manufacturer promises as much as 60 mm more legroom, as well as a 20% increased trunk (422 liters).
The richest equipment even in Europe, in my opinion, is too expensive. Juke in this version costs 31 thousand euros, and for this money you can look after some RAV4 or Tiguan. And for many it will be a surprise to learn that at this price you are offered a car with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine. There are no alternatives to this power plant yet.
Nissan Juke rear view
Undoubtedly, this price is surprising and even stunning, because earlier for about the same amount in Europe, you could buy a Juke in the maximum configuration, but with a 1.5-liter diesel engine. Representatives of the company do not provide hard and irrefutable arguments in favor of such pricing. They only say that the car has become bigger and more modern, there are many different systems and options, and the finishing materials have changed for the better. But it seems to me that such a price for a crossover of this size (and class) is still unjustified. Of course, it is possible to consider the basic configuration for 19 thousand euros, but it will be equipped too modestly, and it will not stand out so much among other crossovers. And the image component is really important for this car.
In the saloon, the new Juke seems much more expensive than its predecessor. And the ” top ” configuration in some moments even provides a premium experience. For example, the upper part of the front panel of the test car is covered with real Italian Alcantara, and not a cheap analog. An alternative to it is leatherette. The plastic on the front door cards is soft, there is a nice orange backlight (as in the Nissan Qashqai). The “aviation” deflectors fit very well into the overall style, and the large color display on the instrument panel is not inferior to the display on the second-generation VW Touareg dashboard.

And in General, the interior of the new Juke has received many updates: a new menu of the multimedia system interface, a modern seven-inch display with a good resolution, TomTom navigation maps that are independently updated via Wi-Fi. So it is no wonder that the second generation Juke is called the most” connective ” Nissan today.
Nissan Juke multimedia system
This Juke was the first car of the brand in which all software is updated over the Internet automatically (just like Tesla’s electric cars). In addition, the ProPilot system is installed here, thanks to which the car can move with a high level of autonomy. The new Juke is able to steer even in traffic, it stops and starts on its own. However, it is still unclear whether this system will be available on our market.
Nissan Juke all-round view cameras
Another useful option that will not be available in our market is the availability of a Wi-Fi hotspot. But the thing is that the functionality of this system is “sharpened” to use the orange operator, and it is impossible to use other SIM cards. We have, of course, this operator and does not smell.
Nissan Juke air deflector
But the multimedia system has Apple CarPlay. Thanks to the large Central display, its implementation looks really impressive. On the other hand, the all-round cameras here do not stand up to any criticism due to the poor image quality. Nissan clearly needs to review the supplier, because the same devices can be found even in premium Infiniti. Although the camera system itself has a useful option: image areas where there are moving objects are highlighted.
Nissan Juke front seats
Thanks to the fact that the steering column can now be adjusted for departure, even a tall driver (with a height of 193 cm, like me) will be easy to get settled. In the” top ” version, the front seats are very comfortable, while they also look very presentable. And the Bose speakers can be installed directly in the headrests.
In General, three types of speakers are available for the new Nissan Juke. The base level offers four speakers (one in each of the doors). The next level already offers six speakers (in the front racks, a tweeter is added). But the most advanced system is an acoustic system called Base Personal Plus, which already has eight acoustic elements. The rear doors were left without speakers, but they are in the front doors, in the front pillars and in each of the head restraints (two). This solution is designed to create a panorama of sound. But it is precisely this imbalance that is the problem with this system.
Electronic music sounds good here due to the fact that a subwoofer is also installed under the seats. High frequencies are detailed due to high-quality tweeters. But as soon as you include compositions of a different genre, where the midrange frequencies are clearly present, the sensations change. Due to the low position of the speakers in the front doors (almost at the feet of the driver and passenger), guitars, for example, sound unintelligible. As a result, the overall score for sound quality in the “top” version is 6.5/10.
We can assume that the average version of the speaker system (with speakers in the rear doors) will not sound fundamentally worse. In addition, if you often drive with the company in the back row, it is logical that the presence of speakers in the rear doors will definitely not be superfluous.
Rear row and trunk
About the previous Nissan Juke said that the back row is suitable only for small children. But I would not agree with this statement, because it is customary to carry children in individual chairs. So, just the child seats in the back row and did not fit.
Nissan Juke second row of seats
Now the situation has changed dramatically. With my considerable height, I sit down “by myself”, barely touching the backs of the front seats with my knees. Brand representatives say, again, that 60 mm of legroom has been added here, and the headroom has increased by 10 mm. But even more I like this: now under the seat space for stops-with a margin, and the angle of the back of the rear sofa is selected optimally. Together, this is a huge step forward when compared to the previous generation. There is also one USB charging available for rear passengers. However, in 2020, I think there should be at least two of them, but this is also progress for the model.
Nissan Juke trunk
In the last generation, the trunk was very small: its volume was 354 liters. In this generation, the compartment has increased to 422 liters, which allows you to accommodate much more cargo. By the way, this is significantly more than the same C-HR (297 liters) and almost as much as the Volkswagen T-Cross (455 liters). At the same time, the compartment upholstery is of excellent quality, the raised floor is dense and thick, and the loading opening has expanded with the change of generation. Placed under the floor of the stowaway.
Technology and dynamics
The previous model had a good clearance of 18 cm. In this generation, the manufacturer promises at least as much. But off-road capabilities are still limited: all-wheel drive is no longer offered. Previously, you could buy a Juke in the Nismo version with all-wheel drive and engine power under 200 “horses”. On the road, this car behaved very provocatively, and most importantly, significantly influenced the overall image of the model.
Nissan Juke automatic transmission selector
Now you can only choose the gearbox: “mechanics”or ” robot”. The good news is that the old CVT, which I thought was pretty dull, is going down in history. Now a seven-speed “robot” with two dry clutches will be installed here. This unit is a joint development with Renault.
Nissan Juke engine
But the engine, again, is offered only one. Under the hood, the new Nissan Juke has a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo engine with 118 HP and 200 Nm of torque (in Overboost mode). And now, thanks to a new gearbox and turbo engine according to the passport, the 1.0-liter Juke accelerates faster than the old one with a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine and CVT.
Nissan Juke acceleration to 100
Everything is logical: while the variator “chews the chains”, the “robot” cheerfully goes through two gears. Previously, acceleration to the first 100 km / h according to the passport was 11.5 s. but now the Juke with the ” robot “should accelerate in 11 s, and the version with the” mechanics ” – in General in 10.5 s.in Reality, I managed to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.5 s. Despite the difference from the stated result, for a car of this class and with such an engine, 11 is a good indicator. On the other hand, it is still slower than the Toyota C-HR with a 2.0-liter hybrid unit (8.2 c) or the Volkswagen T-Cross with a 1.0-liter TSI and a DSG “robot” (10.2 C).
In General, it should be said that the car rides quite fun. Conveniently, there are gearshift paddles, and you can easily switch between Sport, Eco and Normal modes using the key on the Central tunnel. The engineers managed to make the steering wheel a little sharper and heavier. The suspension is still set up in a European way; it seems that it has become softer, but in General the emphasis is still shifted towards sports settings, rather than imposing. Although it is worth considering that our car is equipped with 19-inch wheels. I can’t even imagine what all this will turn into if you equip the car with basic 16-inch wheels. But on a test car, actively entering turns is easy and pleasant.
Nissan Juke behavior in the city
Engine (despite the small volume) he was surprisingly responsive. And the power and torque for this crossover is enough. By the way, the same return is shown by the TSI developed by VAG (115 HP and 200 Nm). Only here the maximum speed that juke develops is slightly lower-180 km / h – The engine noise is not critical, but the vibrations are noticeable. It seems that a diesel engine is installed under the hood: the absence of one cylinder is not easy to hide. But this is the result of the transition to more environmentally friendly exhaust standards, which is now so eager for Europeans. And this process is irreversible.
Nissan Juke on the track
I had a chance to ride on paving stones. I can say with confidence that by the standards of the class, the noise insulation in Juke is quite good. Fuel consumption-according to the passport-within 6L./100km. The test Juke consumed no more than 7 liters, but if desired, you can drive in a more economical mode.
I can say for sure that in normal urban operation, this car will not disappoint its audience with its behavior on the road.
The new Nissan Juke was expensive. On the other hand, it does seem more premium. Both outside and inside, the crossover looks incredibly stylish. At the same time, it goes well even with the new 1.0-liter engine. However, this engine is not so good as to pay such money for it.
Nissan Juke top view
I assume that many for the sake of the bright appearance of Juke and the desire to save money will consider buying the basic version for 19 thousand rubles. But the fact is that” in the base ” instead of alloy wheels, stamped wheels on hoods are offered. And in terms of appearance, no individualization is available (in the form of a roof in a contrasting color, for example). In the cabin, instead of a touch-sensitive Central display, there will be only a small” window ” of the radio. In addition, the interior of the simplest version will be upholstered in gray fabric; you will also have to get used to the lack of an armrest.
Nissan Juke wheels
As a result, I will understand those customers who do not count money and will buy Juke just for the sake of emotions. Because this is really a car for emotions, and feelings, as you know, are priceless. But the basic performance of emotions does not give. At least until the price drops to at least 13 thousand euros, like the last generation.
