On Ukrainian roads, the KIA Mohave is a fairly rare car. Even though the first generation of the model lasted on the Assembly line for eleven years. In terms of size, this – already updated-SUV is quite comparable to the Toyota Land Cruiser 200: 4930 mm for Mohave against 4950 for LC200. And in terms of meaning, these cars are similar to each other. Only the test SUV is of Korean origin. Although… we live in a time when the characteristic “Korean” is already synonymous with quality, and not Vice versa.

Comparing the pre-styling model with the new Mohave, I really want to call this upgrade a generation change. But no, this crossover can’t be called new. There is a difference in the design, but if you dig deeper… Although let’s take it in order.
The new KIA Mohave is not officially sold in Ukraine. If you manage to buy it, you will have a more exclusive car than the owner of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Formally.

There are a number of questions about Mohave’s positioning. Some time ago, when testing the KIA Telluride, we thought that this car would be the logical continuation of the Mohave model. After all, they are almost comparable in size. But it didn’t turn out as we thought. As a result, Telluride and Mohave are sold in parallel.
What is the point for a manufacturer to produce two cars that are so comparable in size? I think the fact is that in the US (which is the main market for Telluride), the car is positioned not by size and class, but by meaning and purpose. And for them, there really is a difference between a seven-seat frame car and a car with a load-bearing body. Therefore, in the United States, the flagship model range of KIA is Telluride, and in Korea and in some other markets – Mohave.
Telluride is a load-bearing body, three rows of seats and seven or eight seats. But Mohave, in contrast, already offers a frame, bridges, locks, a winch and a snorkel…. Not really, of course: from the entire list, only the frame is available. By the way, it hasn’t changed at all since 2008. Of course, if Mohave sold better, we would see more evolutionary solutions in the design, but so far this is the case.
It turns out that Telluride is similar in purpose to the Highlander model from Toyota. This is a large comfortable family SUV. A frame Mohave is similar to the Land Cruiser 200. It is also a large comfortable family SUV, but the amenities are a little less, and this car is more adapted to those places where the road surface leaves much to be desired.

Today, body-on-frame SUVs is largely considered to be a vestige. I don’t quite understand who buys them and why, if you only need to move around the metropolis. After all, as a rule, such cars are less comfortable, shaking suspension, inertia in response to steering movements and not the most effective brakes. But if you need to spend most of your time outside the city limits… This is the way to look at Mohave.
Again, at first glance, it seems that the appearance of the KIA Mohave has completely changed. For example, the front optics are now diode, it is completely different from what it was before. The body panels are also not recognizable, and the new taillights are made in the spirit of modern trends of the last decade.

But if you look closely and try not to pay attention to all this “gloss” and “glamour”, you will be able to notice some elements that” migrated ” here from the previous model. For example, the window sill line has remained the same, and in General, the body has not changed much. Despite the fact that now the rear optics look different, in terms of shape, it is not very different from the previous model: the designers just added a jumper between the lights. However, now the light here is diode, of course. It is also worth noting that when creating the appearance of this SUV, Koreans were inspired by the appearance of the Land Cruiser 200. And how else to explain the fact that the hood of the KIA-just a copy of Toyota? The brutal pipes in the rear bumper turned out to be just blind pads: German trends, following the example of the Audi SQ5, reached the Koreans.

So Yes, the appearance of the updated KIA Mohave looks more modern, but it feels like the car has been on the Assembly line for a long time. First of all, this feeling appears because of the rather narrow body. This was done before, but now this practice is no longer used. For example, the same Telluride looks much wider and squat.
But earlier, utilitarian cars were treated more thoroughly. What about now? To check, we drove Mohave to the lift. A steel-shrouded fuel tank catches the eye: not everyone does this now. The rear suspension is independent, which is good for stability, but for serious off-road driving, this is not the most durable option. But the suspension arms are still steel.
There are some simplifications in the updated SUV. For example, the flaps that are designed to cover the lower part of the shock absorber struts are now made of plastic, not steel.

In the previous generation, the Mohave could boast a rear air suspension, but its resource was enough for about 100 thousand kilometers. Now, conventional racks are installed at the back, but they can be adjustable for an additional fee. In addition to the suspension, there are changes in the steering. The power steering was replaced with an electric power booster, which is installed directly on the steering rack, and it is also covered with protection. However, if for this node the protection was not stingy, then the engine received only a plastic dust cover. So a more reliable steel cover will have to be installed independently.
In General, in terms of its equipment, this SUV does not seem to be “gentle”, which is customary to make cars in recent years. I am sure that the frame and steel levers will make themselves felt in terms of comfort, but they will significantly extend the overall life of the car.
The most impressive changes are worth looking for inside the car, because the interior of the test Mohave is significantly different from the previous one. This is a completely different concept and execution, as well as completely different materials and options. And the feeling of being inside can not be compared: the cabin has nothing in common with its predecessor. It should be noted at once that the unpleasant lacquered plastic “under the tree” has disappeared. Now it is replaced by a pleasant to the touch natural veneer. But although the concept of the interior design has changed completely, its architecture has remained the same. For example, the front panel is very short. So now is that boasts of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen.

The test car is equipped with electric seats and steering wheel, the first ones are also equipped with ventilation. Compared to its predecessor, as well as with the Telluride model, the materials here are of higher quality. The panels are mostly finished with soft plastics, although in some places the manufacturer still saved on this (for example, the panel under the multimedia control unit is completely rigid, although it looks quite the opposite).
Only the steering wheel looks ridiculous. It is good when the line is on the skin, it is worse when the line is on soft plastic. But when the seam passes over solid finishing elements, it already looks strange. By the way, the “finish” of the key looks the same.
When you look at the interior of the KIA Mohave, it seems that some lines were drawn by Koreans with an eye on the current VW Touareg. Both the line and the overall shape of the front panel (especially its visor) are very similar to the interior elements of the German crossover. True, the Korean SUV’s center display is smaller than the Touareg’s, but it’s still huge.

The multimedia system is equipped with a classic menu (as for the KIA brand), but does not have Ukrainian or Russian languages. In terms of performance, this “multimedia”, unlike other modern systems of the brand, is slightly behind. Perhaps this is due to the increased screen resolution, which is not easy for the processor to cope with. The Mohave navigation system does not have maps of Europe (which is hardly critical for South Koreans), but with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, this drawback is insignificant.
But the dashboard display can be called flagship without a twinge of conscience. In General, the interior of the current generation of models in many ways “pulls” on the flagship, and not only among KIA cars, but also among other, more popular brands. For example, how elegantly and at the same time informative designers implemented the display of unfastened seat belts on the second and third rows. Toyota Highlander, for example, can only envy this decision.
The dashboard looks just fine, it is devoid of inappropriate elements that are so easy to find in Japanese cars. Animation and image quality are at the European premium level. For this, developers – respect and honor.
Mohave salon, unlike Telluride, has a better elaboration of details, but it is completely different in terms of architecture. The fact is that the seats here are really high, so it can be difficult for a tall driver to get comfortable in a car with a sunroof. If your height is under two meters, just know that this car will not suit you, because you will rest your head on the ceiling. But if your height is less than 190 cm, you will get a certain amount of comfort behind the wheel. However, this does not mean that you will get behind the wheel exactly as you like. The thing is that the interior of a frame car is a special conversation. If you compare it with competitors, it is generally more convenient than in the same Land Cruiser 200. But inside a large Volkswagen or Audi crossover, you will still be more comfortable.

The seats in the test Mohave have improved in comparison with the previous model: this applies both to their shape and settings. One thing is for sure: the salon here gives the impression of an expensive and high-quality product. The quality of materials in the interior decoration here is no longer low-budget, as before. It feels like this is already a premium car in many ways. Not luxury, but still premium. The only thing I would like less is glossy plastic on the Central tunnel. Although this is, of course, small things.
All-round cameras are not bad here. Even in the dark, they do their job well. The interior is also equipped with an air ionizer, and the projection on the windshield will help to distract less from the road. Some moments in the interior and equipment of the Mohave salon were a real surprise for me. For example, I was pleasantly surprised by the audio system (in our case, the “top” Lexicon). It sounds good. I like it when the speakers playing in different frequency bands are slightly separated from each other, but they are relatively close to the listener. The panorama of the sound may be a little blurry in this case, but thanks to the high-quality components installed, you will definitely enjoy the sound.
Interior: rear row and trunk
The space and ease of placement in the back row here can be considered a cross between frame SUVs and cars with a load-bearing body. The Mohave is more convenient than the Land Cruiser 200, primarily because of the higher landing. But still not so much that you can drive in the back, handing over control of the car to the driver (even though there are buttons for electric adjustment of the front right seat, with which the passenger in the back can move and tilt it). The finishing materials here are also better than those of Telluride: the door cards are finished with soft plastic and veneer, and the Assembly and paneling feel high standard.

The angle of the back row seats can be adjusted. At the same time, the height of the pillow changes, and this is done so that when the backs are folded, the platform turns out to be level with the trunk floor. For the convenience of rear passengers, an armrest with Cup holders (with a slightly strange plastic texture), two USB charging ports and one 220V outlet are available. As a result, I can say that the second row provides passengers with a sufficient amount of legroom, but the height of the space is not enough. Although if you consider that the Mohave is a frame car, this is still a very decent result.
The test car does not have a third row, but it has an incredible trunk size. This is exactly the case when talking about liters does not make sense. The floor is hard and consists of two parts. In two niches there are practical organizers where you can put all sorts of small things.

It is worth saying that in other versions of the interior layout, Mohave can have six or seven seats. In the first case, it is two captain’s chairs on the second row and a sofa for two on the third, in the second-a sofa both on the second row and on the third.
Motor and dynamics
The powerplant here remains the same-a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that produces 260 HP and 560 Nm of torque. As in the past Mohave, this engine is paired with a” classic “eight-speed”automatic”. Previously, this tandem accelerated the car to the first 100 km / h in 9 seconds. Now the manufacturer claims that after restyling, these same units allow the Mohave to accelerate even faster-within 8.7 seconds.

During the test, we were unable to measure real acceleration due to road conditions. But it is worth noting that this engine, of course, is not as cheerful as that of the same Volkswagen Touareg. On the other hand, the reactions here are set up differently. The gearbox is in no hurry, the steering wheel is a little late, and the brakes…. This is a separate topic, which we will discuss below. Therefore, as for me, the dynamic performance of the car is quite consistent with its character. And a large return could even have a detrimental effect on the feeling of safety at the wheel.
But even if the car in normal conditions and does not “leave” from 9 s, no one should have any complaints about the dynamics. The fact is that thanks to the soft suspension, any acceleration feels very good. And with 560 Nm of torque under the hood, it is difficult to imagine a situation in which there will not be enough traction. Although when we talk about the” softness ” of the suspension, you need to make an adjustment for the presence of the frame.

As I said, there is an electric power steering system installed here. It replaced the power steering due to safety requirements. Thanks to this, there is also a function of steering in the lane. Due to the installation of the new node, the manageability should have improved. But we remember that the concept of “handling” for a frame car is quite conditional. The steering wheel is generally not bad here, it can return “to zero”. Some “ramniki” (for example, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport) can not boast of such a setting. The car also behaves stably at speed. And this level can already be considered sufficient, because every turn of the steering wheel is accompanied by body rolls. So the pleasure of driving is out of the question.
The smoothness of the KIA Mohave (given its design) is not bad. It shakes less than the same Pajero Sport, but the Land Cruiser 200, for example, is less susceptible to road surface. And if you compare KIA with cars of the same size (without regard to the presence of the frame), the Toyota Highlander, for example, behaves much better on bad roads.

Sound insulation in Mohave is made at a high level. Outside noises only penetrate through the glass. But the operation of the suspension and engine, as well as the noise from the wheels, are not heard at all. And if you can hear some kind of engine sound, then you will only get pleasure from it. After all, under the hood – a real V6, which sounds really low. In addition, in Sport mode, the speaker system amplifies the sound of the engine.
During the test, our fuel consumption was 14.5 l/100 km. Of course, we are talking about a ragged pace of driving with fast accelerations. On average, the flow rate in the city is about 12.5 l/100 km. In my opinion, this is too much for a modern car, even if under the hood of a 3.0-liter V6 with 260 HP. for Example, commensurate representatives of VAG in terms of fuel consumption behave more modestly. On the other hand, Toyota consumes even more, so this result can be called average in class.

The all-wheel drive system has not changed: a clutch is installed in the middle, and a free differential is installed in the back. But in this generation, there is also a washer-regulator, with which you can choose one of three driving modes: “Mud”, “Snow” and “Sand”. These three fixed modes only affect the operation of the ESP and the settings of the traction control system. The lack of drastic changes is a good sign, because the previous Mohave was characterized by good cross-country ability. Therefore, if there is still something improved and added, it is done to keep up with the times. At the same time, the lower row of the box was left. However, there is no special need for it, because the amount of torque should be enough in all cases. But do not forget that the long base, overhangs and clearance of 19 cm will be sufficient only for driving on a country road,but not for gray off-road.
We were not able to measure the exact performance indicators of the braking system, as well as acceleration. With a slight slope, the braking distance of the SUV with 100 km / h was about 50 m, with a slope of about 44. But this data is enough to confidently say that Mohave is not too willing to slow down (the” safe ” indicator is 40 m).

But the SUV’s active safety systems have reached a higher level compared to their predecessor. Now there is a whole list of new assistants: lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, automatic stop when driving both forward and reverse. Adaptive cruise control is also now available. In General, this car is well equipped even compared to European competitors. On the other hand, there is no need to talk about direct competitors from Europe right now. If you are looking for a car with a stronger suspension to drive mainly on bad roads, the range of suitable SUVs is sharply reduced. An alternative may be the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, but it is not so comfortable, and the dimensions are inferior to the Mohave. But a Toyota Land Cruiser with a diesel engine is significantly more expensive.
KIA Mohave is not a car for young people. This SUV is suitable for an established person, for whom the choice of car is a balanced decision. In the first place, the Mohave buyer will have practicality and versatility, rather than the brand logo and imaginary status.
But do not think that a large frame SUV with a good 3.0-liter diesel engine, bright appearance, high-quality leather interior with wooden inserts, as well as huge screens and an excellent set of active safety systems is also equipped with a low price tag. The test car costs 55 thousand dollars. At first glance, it may seem that this is too much, but after listing all the advantages, you understand that this price is quite adequate and reasonable.
